He is now declared a hero.
In a truly heroic act, an 18-year-old student in eastern China has captured the hearts of many after choosing to save his classmate’s life over attending a crucial exam.
As Jiang Zhaopeng was on his way to the much-anticipated Spring Gaokao, China’s national vocational entrance exam, his classmate unexpectedly suffered a heart attack and collapsed.
Without hesitation, Jiang sprang into action. He performed CPR while their driver, known as Wong, raced them to the hospital, urgently alerting traffic police and receiving permission to speed through red lights—a journey that took only seven minutes.
Despite the alarming circumstances—his classmate’s heart had stopped for a full 30 minutes—doctors were able to revive him. After confirming his friend was stable, Jiang made his way to the exam center. Unfortunately, he arrived late and missed part of the test but remained steadfast in his belief that he made the right decision.
“My exam can wait, but my classmate only lives once.”
— Jiang

Jiang’s bravery has gone viral, inspiring countless individuals online. As a testament to his courage, on May 14, he and Wong were granted a Courageous Act Award and a reward of 10,000 yuan (around $1,385 USD). Additionally, there are reports that Jiang will have the opportunity to retake the exam.
