Japanese couple Kofu and Aiko shock fans with 60-year age gap romance
The controversy began when 23-year-old university student Kofu and 83-year-old Aiko went public with their five-month relationship despite a massive 60-year age difference. The pair met through Aiko’s granddaughter, who was Kofu’s classmate.
Born in 1942 in Osaka, Aiko has a full life history: twice married, mother of two, grandmother of five, and former horticulturist owner of a large botanical garden. She stays active with daily exercise.
Kofu is a cheerful soon-to-be graduate interning in advertising design and environmental planning. He openly admits his type has always been older women.
Their breakthrough came during a Disneyland trip initially planned by Aiko’s granddaughter. After she dropped out last-minute, Kofu and Aiko spent the day alone. Surrounded by rides and a sunset at Cinderella’s Castle, Kofu confessed his feelings, and Aiko agreed to try love again.
The couple kept their romance secret at first but found family support once revealed. They’ve been living together and mark their anniversary on Valentine’s Day.
Daily life includes Aiko cooking while Kofu handles small care acts like preparing her toothpaste at night. He says:
“Seeing her face every morning makes me happy.”
Aiko is equally doting, loving his youthful energy and appetite.
Online reaction is mixed—shock and disbelief dominate, but many agree the couple looks genuinely happy despite the unusual pairing.
This romance continues to gain traction as an unconventional love story breaking age barriers.
