K-netizens discuss Son Heung-min’s extortion controversy

K-netizens talk about Son Heung Min's blackmail scandal

The group behind the blackmail scheme targeting Son Heung Min has been apprehended.

On May 14, reports confirmed the arrest of a man in his 40s and a woman in her 20s on charges of attempted extortion. The pair allegedly blackmailed the football star, claiming the woman was pregnant with his child and demanding hundreds of millions of KRW.

It emerged that one of the suspects began pressuring Son Heung Min’s representatives last year, successfully obtaining more than 300 million KRW (approximately 214,889 USD). As the demands for further payments escalated, Son Heung Min’s team decided to report the matter to the police.

Korean netizens have taken to various online platforms to express their mixed reactions. Comments include:

“The more that comes out, the more shocking it gets. A woman in her 20s, a man in his 40s… female predator alert.”

“If it’s Son Heung Min, just say Son Heung Min. What’s with ‘Son’s side’? Do his managers handle everything, including private matters?”

“Seems like the girlfriend wasn’t just some average woman.”

As discussions unfold, the incident sheds light on the complexities of celebrity relationships and the pressures faced by public figures in South Korea.
