Choo Sung Hoon Criticizes Daughter’s Admission to Elite NYC School: “Too Costly, Too Much Discrimination”

Choo Sung Hoon opposes daughter’s enrollment in prestigious NYC school "Too expensive, too much racism"

Choo Sung Hoon recently shared insights during a visit to Los Angeles, as captured in a video on his official YouTube channel, uploaded on May 15. The mixed martial arts fighter discussed his views on racial discrimination in the U.S. and elaborated on why he decided against enrolling his daughter, Sa Rang, in a prestigious school in New York City.

When asked about his personal experiences with racism, Choo noted, “I didn’t experience that when I lived in America. Especially in Hawaii, where there are many Asians, I never felt any discrimination.” He recounted a time when he and his wife, Japanese model Shiho Yano, considered a prominent New York school. “We went to a really good school and even attended an interview. But it was just too expensive,” he explained.

Choo raised concerns about the racial climate in New York, citing a conversation with a local who described it as "one of the most racist places." This input significantly influenced his decision. “They said, ‘Why send a child to a scary place where there’s so much discrimination?’ That really stuck with me, and I decided against it. In the end, I’m glad we didn’t go through with it. We chose Hawaii instead,” he added.

Regarding Sa Rang’s education, Choo emphasized a relaxed approach, stating, “She doesn’t have to study or play sports if she doesn’t want to. The same goes for Shiho. We never force her to do anything — we just say, ‘It would be nice if you did.’ That’s all.”

Choo married Shiho Yano in 2009, and the couple welcomed their daughter in 2011. For more on Choo Sung Hoon, check his official page on Allkpop.
