Netflix is set to premiere its original series ‘Dear Hongrang (Tangeum)‘ on May 16. This mystery melodrama unfolds in the Joseon era, centering around Hong Rang (played by Lee Jae Wook), the long-lost son of a prominent merchant clan who returns after a 12-year absence with no memories of his past. His half-sister Jae Yi (played by Jo Bo Ah) is initially suspicious of him, leading to a complex emotional journey.
The series is notable for its multi-genre narrative, blending mystery with melodrama as Hong Rang grapples with his fractured identity. The tension escalates when he returns to the Min Merchant Guild, prompting unusual events and revealing hidden truths.

Jae Yi, who yearns for her brother’s return, is ironically the first to express doubt about him. Their dynamic evolves from wariness to a mysterious attraction, as a web of complications unfolds involving other characters: adopted heir Moo Jin (Jung Ga Ram), de facto owner Min Yeon Ui (Uhm Ji Won), and power-hungry merchant leader Shim Yeol Guk (Park Byung Eun).
The casting is another highlight, featuring seasoned actors who deliver nuanced performances. Lee Jae Wook’s portrayal of Hong Rang captures the character’s inner turmoil, while Jo Bo Ah conveys Jae Yi’s conflicted emotions with depth. Jung Ga Ram portrays Moo Jin with complexity, Uhm Ji Won balances cold calculation with maternal desperation, and Park Byung Eun adds tension as Shim Yeol Guk.

The show’s production quality is expected to be exceptional, helmed by director Kim Hong Sun, known for his work on ‘Money Heist: Korea – Joint Economic Area‘ and ‘The Guest‘. The series captures the Joseon era authentically with meticulous set design and costuming, enhancing character dynamics visually. The OST features tracks like ABOUT’s “Burning Petals” and Kwon Jin Ah’s “Yoamjae,” further immersing viewers in the emotive atmosphere.
