K-netizens respond to KISS OF LIFE’s exit from ‘KCON LA’

K-netizens react to KISS OF LIFE's withdrawal from 'KCON LA'

Korean netizens are reacting to girl group KISS OF LIFE, which is facing ongoing backlash from their “racism” controversy.

On May 16 EST, KCON LA announced KISS OF LIFE’s withdrawal from the festival, attributed to intense criticism from fans.

In April, the group drew ire during member Julie’s birthday live broadcast, where they impersonated characters inspired by “old school hip hop.” Many American fans found the portrayal offensive, accusing the group of misrepresenting Black culture.

In response to the backlash, all four members issued handwritten apologies. However, many fans felt these apologies did not suffice.

Korean netizens shared their thoughts on the incident, with comments ranging from disappointment to concern over the group’s future. One user remarked, “I guess KOF fell hard after that controversy.” Others noted, “It’s the right of the fans to not accept your apology,” and “I think to Americans, racism is as serious an issue over there as school bullying is in Korea.”

“The way they handled it was just pitiful.. I don’t know if they can recover from this.”

Another user expressed shock at the negative reception from international fans: “I didn’t realize the overseas fans had turned on them this bad… ouch.” Some commenters also highlighted a perceived disparity in how issues of cultural disrespect are handled concerning American idols versus Asian artists.

The controversy raises questions about KISS OF LIFE’s future as they navigate the fallout from the incident. For more updates, stay tuned.
