NCT’s Doyoung sparks fan hygiene controversy during recent tour
NCT’s Doyoung went viral after seemingly calling out fans for poor hygiene during a concert. The moment embarrassed both the idol and fans, igniting heated debate about “embarrassing” concert culture.
This isn’t the first time an idol addressed fan odor issues.
SKE48’s Matsumura Kaori drew major attention back in 2017 for a public comment on fans’ body odor during handshake events.
She tweeted photos of deodorant products and explained a female fan had complained about the hall’s smell. Matsumura urged fans—and even group members—to stay mindful of their body odor.
“Thank you for attending the handshake event. But we have a severe problem – we received a complaint! A female fan who was queuing up said she could not stand the smell in the venue and hoped something can be done about it. People usually do not notice their own body odour. But we, including the members of SKE48, should take note of it! Let’s get these two products at the drug store and deal with this problem!”

Her advice seemed effective. Matsumura didn’t mention any smell complaints again before graduating from SKE48 in 2019.
She ended her idol career after 9.5 years with a graduation concert and later shared life updates including marriage to a non-celebrity and giving birth in 2023.
“SKE48で最後まで活動出来て本当に幸せでした。最高なグループです素敵な仲間とスタッフさん大切なファンのみなさんと出逢えて本当に良かった。これからはフリーとして活動します。…どうか暖かく見守って頂けると嬉しいです”

Now a popular TV personality, Matsumura is reportedly near the end of her second pregnancy and has recently paused social media updates—likely due to childbirth.
As the situation around Doyoung’s comments evolves, fans continue monitoring reactions to hygiene concerns in idol-fan interactions.
