Jo Bo-ah sparks excitement with ‘Dear Hongrang’ amid drama controversy
Jo Bo-ah (조보아) is back in the spotlight with her Netflix series Dear Hongrang (탄금), marking her first project post-marriage. This comes after Knock-Off (넉오프) faced delays due to controversy involving co-star Kim Soo-hyun (김수현).
Dear Hongrang is a mystery romance set in the Joseon Dynasty. It centers on Hongrang (played by 이재욱), who returns after 12 years, amnesiac, with the only person suspicious being his stepsister Jae-i (Jo Bo-ah). The show explores deep emotions and complicated relationships.
Jo Bo-ah shared her excitement in a recent interview:
“I wanted my next project to be a historical drama… There’s no clear historical verification, but that made the appeal of the genre even stronger.”
Sparks flew as the show rapidly gained traction. Released on June 16, it shot to No. 6 in Netflix’s Global Top 10 (Non-English Series), accumulating 2.2 million views within the first three days and hitting the Top 10 in 12 countries.
Jo noted the emotional impact on viewers:
“Some even said they cried. For me, the scene where they find young Hongrang’s remains was particularly emotional.”
Her character Jae-i undergoes a powerful transformation, complicating her sisterly feelings into romance as Hongrang’s dark past unfolds. Jo described her excitement about the script:
“The relationship between the siblings was especially intriguing… I wanted to portray their misunderstandings in a heartfelt way.”
Based on Jang Da-hye’s novel Dear Hongrang: Swallowed by Gold (탄금: 금을 삼키다), Jo’s interpretation of Jae-i adds emotional depth, contrasting with the more outspoken character in the book.
“The director told us, ‘This is your playground—go have fun.’”
Jo’s first lead role since her marriage has prompted curiosity about her husband’s reaction to the romantic scenes. She revealed:
“He respects the separation between my personal life and work.”
Focused on balancing her career and personal life, Jo emphasized her growth:
“In my 20s, I was full of ambition… I believe that before I can be a good actress, I need to be a well-rounded person.”
As Dear Hongrang continues to climb the charts, Jo Bo-ah is clearly establishing her legacy in the K-drama scene.
