Taeil is facing serious accusations. The former NCT member admitted to charges of aggravated sexual assault during his first trial on June 18 at the Seoul Central District Court. The prosecution is pushing for a seven-year prison sentence, along with a 10-year employment restriction and mandatory personal information disclosure.
The courtroom was tense with three defendants, including Taeil. All were charged under the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Punishment of Sexual Crimes. Prosecutors characterized the case as “extremely serious with malicious intent.”
Taeil entered the court quietly around 10:40 a.m., avoiding the media. He wore dark clothing and glasses, maintaining a calm demeanor as the trial unfolded, with some fans present in the courtroom.
When asked about his current work status, Taeil stated,
“I was expelled from my agency after working as a singer. I’m currently doing part-time work to get by.”
He admitted to all charges, saying,
“I admit to all the charges.”
His lawyer acknowledged the severity of the crime but appealed for leniency. They highlighted Taeil’s expressions of remorse and that the victim accepted his apology. Additionally, the defense mentioned his voluntary surrender to authorities and participation in sexual assault prevention education.
However, prosecutors emphasized the gravity of the offense, detailing how the defendants met a foreign tourist at a nightclub in Itaewon and subsequently assaulted her. They challenged Taeil’s remorse, noting he only surrendered after investigations began.
Taeil expressed regret in his final statement:
“I deeply regret the harm caused to the victim and feel great remorse. I apologize to everyone who is disappointed in me. If given leniency, I will treat it as the last chance in my life and dedicate myself to contributing positively to society.”
After the trial, Taeil left the courthouse in silence, dodging reporters and fans without any public apology.
The charges stem from an incident where Taeil and his accomplices allegedly assaulted an intoxicated woman in June 2022. Following police investigation, the case was sent to prosecutors in September 2023, but a request for an arrest warrant was denied.
Taeil debuted with NCT U in 2016 and later joined NCT 127. SM Entertainment ended his contract in October 2023, citing a loss of trust amid the ongoing investigation. Despite the looming charges, Taeil participated in NCT 127 activities without revealing his allegations, leading to further backlash.
The sentencing hearing is set for 2 p.m. on July 10.
