Squid Game Season 3 is sparking major backlash over its controversial ending.
Netflix dropped the final season on June 27, wrapping up the four-year saga with a brutal continuation of the games. The storyline picks up after the previous season’s rebellion, revealing the fates of fan-favorite characters—mostly tragic.
Player 222, Jun Hee, gives birth mid-game, surviving alongside her baby. But Player 120, Hyun Ju, dies in a heartbreaking scene. Player 149, Geum Ja, kills her own son to protect Jun Hee and her baby. Geum Ja then takes her own life after the players vote to keep playing.
During the jump rope game, Player 456, Gi Hun, carries the baby across because Jun Hee is injured. When Gi Hun tries to go back for her, Jun Hee sacrifices herself, hoping Gi Hun will save her child.
Nine players make it to the next round, including the baby who inherits her mother’s player number. Five adult players try to eliminate the infant as competition. Surprisingly, her father, Player 333, Myung Gi, doesn’t protest.
The final showdown is between Gi Hun and Myung Gi, who threatens to kill his own child. A game glitch leaves only Gi Hun and the baby alive. Gi Hun sacrifices himself so the baby can win, ending the rebellion.
Fans are furious over the baby’s survival and the lack of surviving women. Many call the plot misogynistic. Others see a “pro-life” message, criticizing the story for punishing attempts to “abort” the baby and rewarding sacrifice for the infant’s sake. Gi Hun’s choice to prioritize the baby over his own daughter also drew ire.
