KPop Demon Hunters’ “Your Idol” sparks buzz with dark EXO-inspired themes
“Your Idol,” performed by the demonic fictional group The Saja Boys in KPop Demon Hunters, is causing a stir with its dark, eerie vibe. The song blends haunting energy with twisted fandom dynamics, catching quick attention from K-pop fans.
The film’s music team collaborated with THEBLACKLABEL on the track’s cinematic yet pop-forward sound. Key figures include THEBLACKLABEL’s KUSH and VINCE, plus noted pop songwriter EJAE—who has credits with TWICE and aespa and also voices the character Rumi in the film. EJAE and writing partner Mark Sonnenblick helped develop multiple songs for the project, including “The Huntrix Mantra,” “How It’s Done,” and fan-favorite “Your Idol.”
In a recent Forbes interview, EJAE revealed “Your Idol” draws direct inspiration from EXO’s hits “MAMA” and “Obsession.”
“The Saja Boys, in their demon form, are intentionally feeding the fans’ obsession because that gives them control. That’s what being an idol can feel like—the need to be adored and worshipped. I grew up Christian, so I immediately thought about how ‘idolizing’ something is considered a sin. That tension inspired the creepy twist behind the lyrics: ‘I’ll be your Idol.’” – EJAE
The EXO influences were already baked into the instrumental from THEBLACKLABEL and executive producer Ian Eisendrath when EJAE stepped in. She leaned into the concept by writing lyrics exposing the sinister idol-fan relationship.
“Your Idol” stands out as a chilling commentary on fandom culture’s darker side. Its addictive yet unsettling sound echoes themes of manipulation, control, and devotion tied to the film’s narrative.
Fans have been buzzing over the track’s twisted take on idol worship and obsession, making it one of KPop Demon Hunters’ most talked-about songs.
