Park Seo Joon is officially stepping away from rom-coms—at least for now.
Known for his hit roles in She Was Pretty, Fight For My Way, and What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim, Park Seo Joon announced he’s done with the romantic comedy genre for the foreseeable future.
His recent project, the thriller film Concrete Utopia with Park Bo Young, shows a clear shift in his career direction.
Park Seo Joon said in an interview,
“Til now, I’ve done many rom-coms, so I started wanting to do other genres.”
He elaborated on his change in focus:
“Although each rom-com is different, I wanted to change the genre. I want to keep it fun. I’ve been challenging myself since ‘Secretary Kim,’ and I think I haven’t chosen a rom-com since then, and will continue to do so moving forward.”

Despite distancing himself from rom-coms, Park Seo Joon stressed he still loves the genre:
“Of course, I like rom-coms, and I think that the genre is challenging, so I’m not saying I don’t want to rom-coms, just that my desire to try something different is greater.”

But the rom-com drought may soon end. Park Seo Joon is confirmed for JTBC’s upcoming K-Drama Waiting for Kyungdo, a rom-com. This will be his first romantic role since 2020’s Itaewon Class.
