Super Junior is stirring controversy again amid their 20th anniversary celebrations. The legendary group, originally meant to disband after just three months as Super Junior 05, has defied the notorious “7-year curse” and stuck around longer than some fans have been alive.
SM Entertainment first announced the 12-member boy group in February 2005 as a rotational project similar to NCT U. They planned to cycle through members annually, starting with Super Junior 05 in November 2005. After debuting with the hit “Miracles,” the plan shifted due to success, adding Kyuhyun and dropping the number, becoming just Super Junior.
Despite constant line-up changes and several controversies over the years, including backlash from Leeteuk’s recent Elon Musk mention, the group maintains a somewhat “controversial” status in K-Pop.
The fandom’s frustration surfaced on Twitter with harsh takes:
“FUCK SM ENTERTAINMENT FUCK DONALD TRUMP AND FUCK SUPER JUNIOR”
— @thedoiezenone2“WE COULD’VE BEEN A SUJU FREE SOCIETY”
— @bratzyujin
Now, Super Junior is pushing ahead with a recently announced world tour and their comeback SuperJunior25, a nod to their origins. The group’s legacy is cemented, but the drama and mixed fan reactions keep the spotlight burning hot.
