Director Maggie Kang Discloses J.Y. Park as Her Initial Choice for Demon King Gwi-Ma in Netflix’s ‘K-Pop Demon Hunters’

Director Maggie Kang reveals J.Y. Park was her Original Pick for Demon King Gwi-Ma in Netflix’s 'K-Pop Demon Hunters'

K-Pop Demon Hunters is facing buzz on Netflix! The animated film has become a major hit, especially in South Korea, quickly soaring to one of the platform’s top titles. Co-directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, it features K-pop idols taking on supernatural foes, specifically the demon king Gwi-Ma.

The controversy began when Director Kang revealed a major casting change. She said,

“When we first started casting, we had an idea of Gwi-Ma being a wannabe idol himself. So we thought of J.Y. Park. However, later the vibe of Gwi-Ma changed to a more traditional villain, so Lee Byung-hun was cast.”

J.Y. Park, head of JYP Entertainment, was initially in mind for the role. The idea was to blend his idol persona with the character’s dark side.

But as the story evolved, the character morphed into a classic villain, earning Lee Byung-hun the role. His experience in both Korean and Hollywood hits brought a new depth to Gwi-Ma.

K-Pop Demon Hunters continues to draw attention for its unique blend of genres. Expect more insights as it keeps gaining traction.
