ENHYPEN’s Sunghoon is facing backlash for a major English spelling mistake that stirred controversy online.
Sunghoon attempted to write “good job” to encourage international fans but misspelled it as “good jp.” The word “jp” is a racial slur against Japanese people and linked to anti-Japanese sentiments.
The typo was likely an innocent error. Sunghoon’s limited English skills, combined with the Korean pronunciation overlap between “b” and “p” sounds, caused confusion. The common “Konglish” spelling “good jab” may have contributed to the mistake.
Soon after, Sunghoon corrected himself. ENHYPEN leader Jungwon stepped in to explain Sunghoon’s unfamiliarity with English spelling to fans.
On July 7, 2025, Sunghoon apologized on Weverse:
“During the listening party, I accidentally spelled an English word wrong and it became an issue. I fixed it later after I found out it was wrongly spelled. I had no intentions behind it and it was simply a misspelled word. Thank you to the ENGENEs who were worried for me. I’ll be more careful in the future.”
Sunghoon is known for his hard work and efforts to learn new languages to better connect with fans.
The situation quickly gained traction, with fans showing support for Sunghoon’s sincerity despite the error.
