Ex-Girlfriend of Son Heung Min Arrested, Sparks Major Backlash Among Korean Netizens

Son Heung Min's Ex-Girlfriend Arrested, Triggers Intense Backlash From Korean Netizens

A woman who previously accused South Korea’s national football team captain, Son Heung Min, of fathering her child has been arrested, along with a man believed to be involved in an extortion scheme targeting the player. This development has generated public backlash, not due to the nature of the crime itself, but because of the perceived double standards in the handling of the case.

On May 17, Judge Yoon Wonmook of the Seoul Central District Court approved the arrest warrants for the suspects: a woman in her 20s, identified as Son’s former girlfriend, and a man in his 40s who allegedly became involved with her later. Judge Yoon cited "concerns about destruction of evidence and flight risk" as justifications for the warrants.

The woman is accused of threatening to disclose her alleged pregnancy to the media unless Son paid her a settlement, ultimately receiving over ₩300 million KRW (approximately $214,000 USD). The man, who reportedly learned about the extortion attempt after beginning a relationship with her, later attempted to demand ₩70 million KRW (around $50,000 USD) from Son directly. Both suspects were arrested on May 14 after Son filed a complaint a week earlier.

While the court’s decision may seem routine, the rapid response to this case has prompted skepticism from many in the public. Online discussions have surfaced criticizing the judicial system, with commentators expressing frustration over the lack of urgency in cases involving stalking and blackmail, particularly when female victims are involved.

Statements from social media users reflect a critical perspective on the justice system’s handling of this case. Comments included sentiments of disbelief regarding the swift arrests compared to the often prolonged investigations in cases where female victims are threatened. This ongoing discussion highlights the complexities of societal attitudes toward justice and gender in South Korea.
