Taeil is facing controversy. The former NCT member is involved in a high-profile sexual assault case that’s taking another turn. Both he and prosecutors have filed appeals following a recent court ruling.
On July 16, Taeil submitted his appeal to the Seoul Central District Court’s Criminal Division 26, led by Chief Judge Lee Hyun Kyung. His co-defendants filed their appeals just a day earlier.
Prosecutors are not backing down either. They argue the initial sentence of three years and six months is too lenient. They had initially demanded a seven-year prison term, asserting that “The nature of the crime is extremely serious and morally reprehensible.”
Taeil was taken into custody immediately after the court’s ruling on July 10. The trio was convicted of aggravated quasi-rape under the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Punishment of Sexual Crimes. The court described the case as especially egregious, noting that the defendants exploited the victim’s incapacitated state.
“The defendants took advantage of the victim’s incapacitated state to commit the crime. The nature of the offense is particularly egregious,” the court stated.
Taeil and his co-defendants admitted to the charges. In a plea for leniency, he said, “I want to contribute positively to society and will do my best to live a better life.”
This case traces back to June last year. Taeil and his co-defendants were accused of gang-raping a foreign woman who was unconscious at the time. DNA from all three was found on the victim.
