Future Idol’s Poignant Memories of Childhood in North Korea Before Escape

Upcoming Idol's Heartbreaking Recollections Childhood In North Korea Before Escape

1VERSE is set to debut on July 18 with a unique backstory and a diverse lineup. The boy group has already stirred attention for their viral, funny personalities on social media. Members include Hyuk, Aito, Seok, Kenny, and Nathan, all over 20 years old.

Two members, Hyuk and Seok, were born in North Korea, adding a rare twist to the group’s narrative. Hyuk, from North Hamgyong province, faced severe hardships—growing up poor with divorced parents and a grandmother. His mother escaped North Korea first and urged him to follow, but he stayed behind due to his relationship with his father. He ended up begging on the streets from age nine, running errands for soldiers, and even stealing spoiled food.

At 13, Hyuk escaped North Korea after months of struggle. School was tough since he barely finished primary education before fleeing. Still, he graduated high school at age 20 and worked part-time jobs before being discovered by 1VERSE’s CEO, Michelle Cho.

Seok’s story contrasts with Hyuk’s. Born into a wealthy North Korean family, he secretly consumed Hallyu content, illegal in North Korea, before defecting in 2019 and arriving in South Korea.

Michelle Cho revealed the members’ struggle to voice opinions early on.

I don’t think they were used to questioning things or expressing their opinion. At first, when a trainer asked the reasoning behind their thoughts, the only response was, ‘Because you said so last time.’ Now, Hyuk questions many things. For example, if I ask him to do something, he’ll reply ‘Why? Why is it necessary?’
