Hearts2Hearts is facing controversy after Japanese netizens reacted negatively to teaser images from their upcoming digital single "STYLE."
The backlash began when a user on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) posted, "SM discriminates against Japanese people, yet still uses Japanese culture. What’s that about?" alongside the group’s recent photos.
The teaser showcased a fun photo sticker layout that many users link to Japanese purikura culture. One frustrated Twitter user pointed out, "People are saying, ‘But WISH received no hate,’ but 4 out of their 6 members are Japanese… Hearts2Hearts doesn’t have a single Japanese member. Why are they using Japanese elements?"
Another user commented, "They’re trying to make Japanese culture seem like it originated from Korea." This fueled the debate, with many criticizing the girl group for borrowing from Japanese aesthetics.
Korean netizens were quick to defend Hearts2Hearts. They gathered online to express their disbelief at the accusations. Comments included:
“They’re at it again.”
“Huh?”
“This is absurd.”
“What discrimination?”
“This was popular in Korea, too.”
“The concept they’re using was trending in Korea a long time ago.”
“What? lol.”
“Thanks for the free PR.”
While some Japanese users felt offended, others came to Hearts2Hearts’ defense, highlighting the double standards in the criticism.
As the situation unfolds, all eyes are on Hearts2Hearts as they prepare for their upcoming release.
