BTS broke gender norms early in their career with bold makeup and styling choices during an overseas photoshoot, revealed former makeup artist Han Hyun Jae.
Han recalled the group wanted to try “something that we didn’t usually do for male idols.” Instead of the typical “strong smoky makeup,” BTS went with a softer look. They wore facial accessories traditionally reserved for female idols at the time.
Han said:
“So putting [accessories] on faces was something we did for female idols at the time, but we put a lot of [accessories] and applied blushes that were not usually applied to men.”
The members didn’t stop at facial charms and blush—they added color eyeliners to “give some extra atmosphere.” BTS’s willingness to use these makeup styles aimed to prove “all makeup styles were for all genders.”
Jimin’s skirt from the “Butter” concept also showed their commitment to breaking gender norms.
