Maple Yip breaks silence with new book on cult abuse, two years after Netflix docu-series
Maple Yip is releasing an autobiography on her ordeal with the JMS Church cult. The book, titled Traces, details her recruitment, abuse, and survival inside the cult led by Jung Myung Seok (JMS).
Jung Myung Seok, leader of the JMS Church (now Providence), was convicted of raping three women and sentenced to 10 years in prison in 2008. After his release in 2012, he continued assaulting women until victims like Maple Yip helped put him behind bars again.
The 2023 Netflix docu-series In The Name Of God: A Holy Betrayal brought renewed attention to JMS and his crimes. Maple Yip’s testimony was crucial in exposing the cult’s abuses, which targeted young women, including foreigners.
Maple Yip:
The autobiography… will also warn of how close cults are to individuals and share new details previously not mentioned.
More details on Maple Yip’s experience will come from Traces, but no release date has been announced yet.
Since the series, Maple Yip’s marriage to former idol and Olympian Alex Fong was revealed. She is now pregnant.
The story and book add to ongoing conversations about cult violence in South Korea.
