J-Hope of BTS is facing controversy after opening up about the group’s emotional struggles during their peak years.
On July 5, J-Hope appeared on the YouTube variety show Pinggyego, hosted by Yoo Jae Suk and Jo Se Ho. He spoke candidly about the intense pressure BTS experienced in 2018.
"Around 2018, BTS was receiving so much love that I started wondering if we truly deserved all that attention," he shared. "People’s eyes on us became a little scary. Normally, getting a reaction is something to be grateful for, but it started feeling overwhelming."
Despite the challenges, J-Hope said the group leaned on each other.
“We got through it by reminding ourselves of our message—‘Love Yourself.’ That idea wasn’t just for others; it applied to us too."
Creating music with a meaningful message helped BTS heal.
“We were delivering a message, but it was also something we needed to hear. Writing songs like that helped us learn and grow emotionally."
The episode also covered BTS’s future. With all members completing their military service, J-Hope said they’re gearing up for team activities.
“It’s been such a long time—we haven’t been together as seven in nearly three or four years."
BTS last released a full group project, Yet to Come, in 2022. J-Hope finished his military service as an assistant instructor in October 2023. All other members are also back, including Suga, who recently completed his service.
He continued,
“I’m constantly thinking about how to best coordinate things with the members as we reunite."
Yoo Jae Suk encouraged J-Hope, saying he’s excited for future BTS concerts. J-Hope replied he would make sure to invite him.
Earlier this year, BTS announced plans for a full-group comeback in spring 2026, marking their first official activity as a complete unit since their military service began.
