Netizens Discuss aespa’s Decision to Move Away from KWANGYA and AI Concept

aespa is facing backlash for shifting away from their original AI concept.

The controversy began when netizens started debating the group’s evolving identity since debuting with "Black Mamba" in 2020. Initially, aespa embraced an ‘AI concept’—their name blending ‘Avatar X Experience’ and ‘aspect,’ representing duality. Their early tracks blended experimental sounds with an emphasis on a multi-universe AI-driven visual concept.

However, things changed. During the "MY WORLD" era, aespa pivoted stylistically, possibly due to the departure of key figures Lee Soo Man and Yoo Young Jin from SM Entertainment. As management shifts occurred, aespa moved from their narrative-heavy approach to a darker, more grounded high-teen vibe.

Now, many perceive aespa’s aesthetics as having taken on what’s being termed a "metallic vibe"—a colder, edgier look compared to the previous AI focus.

One netizen posted:

"aespa should have just stuck with the AI concept. Why did they switch to the metallic vibe ㅠㅠ The AI, futuristic concept was so unique, but the metallic theme feels kind of generic."

Others echoed this sentiment, expressing nostalgia for the KWANGYA universe and suggesting that aespa might’ve thrived creatively had they stuck to that theme.

SM Entertainment stated the KWANGYA concept wasn’t abandoned, just temporarily set aside as aespa returned to "the real world" for a break. General director Cho Woo Chul commented:

"Going forward, I still want aespa to be defined as aespa. I believe the music and concepts they pursue are uniquely their own."

Opinions on aespa’s latest song "Dirty Work" are mixed. While some feel it strays far from the AI concept, others believe it showcases a softer tone than previous tracks like "Savage" and "Girls."

Reactions vary widely. One user noted:

"If they had stuck with the AI concept, aespa probably would’ve been the group in ‘K-pop Demon Hunters’ instead of TWICE."

Another lamented:

"Honestly, I’m kinda sad the lyrics don’t mention KWANGYA anymore… I feel like ever since Lee Soo Man left, aespa lost its magic."

While fans debate these changes, aespa continues to evolve, but the questions remain: Is this new direction the right move? Can they reclaim their unique edge?
