Jungkook Faces Backlash Over Controversial Hat
BTS member Jungkook has issued a formal apology after sparking controversy by wearing a hat with a slogan linked to Japanese far-right ideology.
On June 14, Jungkook took to Weverse, stating, “I sincerely apologize for causing disappointment and discomfort due to the phrase on the hat I wore during rehearsal today.” He added, “I deeply regret that I wore something without fully understanding the historical and political context of the phrase. There is no excuse—this was entirely my lack of awareness and care.”
The offense stemmed from a rehearsal for J-Hope’s encore concert ‘j-hope Tour ‘HOPE ON THE STAGE’ FINAL’ held on June 13. The hat’s slogan, “MAKE TOKYO GREAT AGAIN,” is a variation of Trump’s campaign slogan and has been associated with Japanese far-right figures.
Public reaction was swift and intense. Fans expressed disappointment, with comments like “How could he not know?” and “This is too serious” circulating widely online. While some fans showed understanding, others emphasized the responsibility that comes with his global fame.
Freshly discharged from the military on June 11, Jungkook had just performed his hit single ‘Seven’ at J-Hope’s concert, a surprise return that was overshadowed by the backlash.
In response to the criticism, Jungkook stated, “I’ve taken all the feedback seriously and have discarded the hat immediately. I will be more thoughtful in my actions moving forward. Once again, I’m truly sorry.”
His apology underscores the importance of cultural sensitivity, reminding fans of the complexities linked to global influence.
