BLACKPINK Jisoo’s movie Omniscient Reader: The Prophet is facing backlash over casting, character changes, and bad cinematography. The film, released July 23 in Korea, is an adaptation of the popular webtoon Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint.
The controversy began with fans criticizing “alterations made in the characters” and the casting choices. Soon after, scathing reviews targeted the movie’s cinematography, sparking serious doubts about its box office prospects.
Despite the heat, the movie topped the Korean box office on July 25 with 80,734 ticket holders that day. Its total audience hit 281,263 by July 26.
Experts are still monitoring the numbers closely. On day two, attendance dropped 40% while it remained No. 1. The momentum is expected to slow further.
Audience reactions are mixed. Longtime fans are disappointed by the plot deviations and changed character personas. However, viewers unfamiliar with the webtoon find the film enjoyable.
The movie’s massive production budget demands 6 million admissions to break even. Early ticket sales suggest hitting that number will be tough.

Industry analysts point to the overall decline of Korean movie theater attendance as another blow. Footfall in the first half of 2025 hit a 21-year low. While 2024 saw multiple 10-million-viewer hits, Opposition Party is the top movie in 2025 so far with just 3.3 million admissions.
The film’s financial success remains uncertain, with a steep climb ahead.
