Petition Calls for KBS to Prohibit BTS’s SUGA Following DUI Conviction

SUGA Petition

SUGA is facing controversy. A petition has been filed on KBS’s viewer message board, demanding a ban on BTS member SUGA from all broadcasts due to his past drunk driving offense.

The petition, titled "Request to restrict SUGA’s appearance in relation to his DUI fine," was posted on June 23. The petitioner urged KBS to call a meeting of its Broadcast Appearance Regulation Review Committee to review SUGA‘s eligibility, stressing the seriousness of his actions and his influence.

SUGA was slapped with a 15 million KRW (approx. 11,000 USD) fine in September 2024 for riding an electric scooter while under the influence. His blood alcohol level was reported to exceed 0.08%, the legal limit that triggers a license revocation in South Korea.

“Drunk driving is a serious offense that can directly endanger others. As a public figure with considerable influence over young people, SUGA‘s continued appearances on television could weaken public awareness of the gravity of DUI crimes,” the petition reads.

The petitioner noted that KBS hadn’t acted sooner due to an ongoing investigation but pressed that SUGA‘s fine was finalized on September 27, 2024, and he officially completed his alternative service on June 21, 2025. They emphasized the need for swift action.

“Prompt and fair measures must be taken to maintain public trust and uphold the broadcaster’s responsibility as a public institution.”

KBS has a review process to decide if individuals involved in unlawful behavior should be sidelined. Previous cases include actor Kwak Do Won and singer Kim Ho Joong, who were both temporarily banned for DUI-related issues.

As of now, SUGA has completed his military service, and all seven BTS members are back from duty. Fans are eager for the group’s complete return.
