NewJeans is facing serious controversy after a sasaeng fan unlawfully entered their dorm and stole personal items.
On June 11th KST, the Seoul Western District Court sentenced the offender, known as Defendant A. They were charged with trespassing and theft following a trial led by Judge Kim Min Jeong. Prosecutors sought a 10-month prison sentence.
The incident occurred on December 18th, 2022, when Defendant A discovered an open door at the NewJeans residence in Yongsan-gu, Seoul. They returned three days later, stealing items like a clothes hanger and a banner. The residence was empty, as NewJeans had moved out after terminating their contract with ADOR earlier that month. A also filmed the dorm and shared the footage online.
A’s legal representative admitted to the charges and stated,
“The defendant deserves criticism. However, they are remorseful and have cooperated fully with the investigation.”
They urged the court for leniency, noting this was the defendant’s first offense. The lawyer added,
“Given their usual conduct, the risk of reoffending is low.”
During the trial, Defendant A expressed deep remorse. They read a tearful statement:
“I made a terrible mistake due to a reckless decision. I deeply apologize to the artist I admired and to the agency for causing pain.”
The defendant pleaded for a chance to become a civil servant, stating,
“I will live responsibly while taking care of my ailing mother.”
Their mother was present in court and broke down in tears during the proceedings.
The incident has drawn widespread attention, highlighting ongoing concerns about sasaeng fans and celebrity privacy in the K-pop industry.
