EXO obsession leads to tragic death of 13-year-old girl in China
A 13-year-old girl in China died after a violent confrontation with her father over her intense obsession with EXO. The incident began in November 2013, when her fixation on the group started affecting her studies and daily life.
Her father, Zhou Kai, became alarmed when she refused to attend school over a missing pencil sharpener. His attempts to intervene exposed a growing rift as she spent most of her time managing fan activities online and demanding money to attend EXO concerts.
Zhou confronted her, urging her to value her parents’ love over unknown celebrities. The girl responded coldly:
“I love them a thousand times more than I love you”
In a fit of rage, Zhou grabbed a kitchen knife, intending to scare her. The situation escalated and he stabbed her. He then tried to take his own life but survived. The girl sadly did not.
In court a year later, Zhou admitted the crime and described their fractured relationship. Her room was filled with EXO merchandise, showing how deeply she was consumed by her fandom, unaware of the financial burden on her family.
Zhou said:
“When she said idols are better than all the parents like me… I couldn’t take it anymore”
The case highlights the dangers of obsession and unresolved family conflict spiraling out of control.
