Hwang Dong-hyuk speaks on ‘Squid Game’ Season 3 ahead of its premiere
Director Hwang Dong-hyuk is stirring excitement as ‘Squid Game’ Season 3 gears up for its release on June 27. At a press conference in Seoul, Hwang shared insights about the new season, focusing on themes of guilt, despair, and belief in humanity.
He kicked things off by elaborating on the story:
“Season 3 follows Seong Gi-hun, who falls into guilt and despair after losing his closest friend Deok-su during the revolt… focus this time on how the conflict concludes—through a battle of values.”
Expect brutal challenges as Gi-hun returns to the game, navigating inner turmoil and meeting new contestants. Hwang’s vision aims to spark questions about contemporary issues:
“I wanted to raise questions about the side effects of late-stage capitalism, excessive competition, and the despair it causes… Can we still pass on a sustainable world to future generations?”
Hints about the games suggest a mix of familiar childhood games reimagined in deadly scenarios. Hwang confirmed:
“There’s also a hidden game that doesn’t appear in the teaser.”
Intriguingly, Cheolsu will make a surprise return alongside Young-hee, after a viral reveal in Season 2.
Reflecting on the six-year journey of ‘Squid Game’, Hwang stated:
“No one expects something this massive… creating this with such great actors was a valuable experience… I won’t let myself be blinded by the sparkle and spotlight of success.”
Mark your calendars—‘Squid Game’ Season 3 drops on Netflix June 27!
