Ahn Seo Hyun sparked controversy in 2020 after being removed from the KBS drama School 2020.
The 21-year-old actress, known for works like Okja (2017) and The Housemaid (2010), claimed on Instagram that producers replaced her unfairly after she was considered for the female lead opposite X1’s Kim Yohan.
She posted,
“I’ve been waiting for School 2020’s response for 300 days.”
She also questioned trust and broke silence with,
“If there’s depth to trust, how deep should my trust be?”
and replied to a fan with,
“Why don’t adults keep their promises?”
Ahn’s father went public in May 2019, saying the production company informed him of her removal through social media, despite a recent script reading with the show’s PD. He explained,
“We read the script with Han PD just a few days ago, so we never suspected that they wouldn’t follow through with it. Recently, a new PD came to me and told me they were working on the contract. But there were differences from the first time we talked about it, and there were things that we didn’t talk about in the past. I think they said things that way so that we wouldn’t take the drama. The production company has been taking their time on the contract, delaying things, and creating a situation as if we should just drop out.”
School 2020 producers fired back a day later, blaming Ahn’s father’s “excessive demands” and calling her removal a mutual agreement. They warned of legal action and stated,
“We tried to wrap up the matters quietly in worry that it could harm the young actress. It was a difficult process, but due to Ahn Seo Hyun’s father spreading false information, we had no choice but to announce our stance. If this situation continues, we will reveal the entire process we had with actress Ahn Seo Hyun and take strong legal measures.”
After the drama fallout, Ahn Seo Hyun kept a low profile until landing the lead in Goo Hye Sun’s Dark Yellow (2021). The film premiered at the Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival and earned praise internationally.
In 2022, she starred opposite 2AM’s Jinwoon in Oh! My Ghost. Since then, she’s kept a low profile with no new K-Drama or film projects announced.
Ahn recently signed with Ghost Studio, signaling a possible comeback soon.
For now, Ahn Seo Hyun is living her best life away from the spotlight.
